Watership Down - Richard Adams
Rating -
Genre - Fantasy
Secondary Genre - Animal
Pages - 475
Reading Level - Children - Adult
Synopsis -Set in England's Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of adventure, courage and survival follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, to a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society.
Reviewers Opinion - Possibly one of my most favorite books of all time so this may be a bit biased. Richard Adams creates a world where animals are nolonger animals but characters you care about, laugh with, cry with and live with. A charming yet exillerating adventure that follows a young rabbit named Fiver along a journey that takes them to the very end of their world and beyond. A masterful writer he paints a world that is so familiar yet so mysterious that we cannot help ourselves but be taken in. His characters keep you reading and pull emotion from you like very few can. I highly recommend it.
Pros - One of the more well written animal centric books out there. All ages read, youll love it as a kid or an adult
Cons - can get a bit brutal at times for children but it does not detract from the story.
Similar Books - Tailchasers Song, Golden Road
Other Books by Author - Shardik, Tales from Watership Down (addition by PipeOragenWolf)

Agreed, colorful as it is I think that if I were to re-read it I would probably still give it a four. After reading this I read Tailchasers song by Tad Williams and recieved about the same impact with about half the pages.

| Richard Adams also wrote Plague Dogs. I Haven't read it for ages but it's in a vaguely similar vein with animals attempting to find freedom and Utopia. It's about two dogs who escape from an animal testing lab and spark off a massive dog-hunt after they are believed to have been test subjects for new bioweapons. I remember it being quite good but don't have it in my new flat to read it again and make a proper review. It certainly wasn't in the same league as Watership Down though. |

Another book I shall have to look out and make a better synopsis for. Especially since I last read it about 8 years ago. _________________ "Fairytales do not teach children that dragons exist; they already know that. Fairytales teach children that dragons can be killed."
