Light shone through the stained glass windows, painting the white creatures below in vibrant hues of reds, blues, yellows greens and violets. Micah looked at Julie and, as prompted by the rat, began to speak. When he finished, Julie had tears in her eyes, but not from sorrow, but joy. He voice quivered and cracked with happiness as she begin to speak to Micah. The rat nodded solemly and spoke once more. When he finished, Micah and Julie nodded in unison and said

“I do.”

They had done it. They survived the world’s harshness. It didn’t matter to them that they no longer had a place to live, it did not matter to them that they had no money, they were just happy to finally be together. They walked out of the church and through the city limits. Julie hung lightly across Micah’s chest, giving him a gentle, feathery hug while they walked.

“Where are we going to go though?” She asked him while looking at his determined face.

“Where else?” he replied, “The only home either of us have left.”

As he spoke, the ashy ruins of an old house came into view, 4 graves lay on the ground beside the remains. Julie was confused.

“How are we going to live here?” she asked

“We’ll have to repair it. My uncle did a number on it, as you can see…”

And repair it they did. It wasn’t easy work, but through the desire of home, the two persevered for a month and a half of the heavenly weather of Nirvana to rebuild their home. It was shorter than the original Tribal house, and significantly smaller, but it did not matter to the couple. As Micah went out to collect some scraps from their old lodging before the scavengers picked it clean, Julie stayed and spoke to Micah’s family.

“Hi again everyone.” She started hesitantly “I hope you don’t mind that I’m part of the family now. I guess that means you’ll be seeing more of me around.” She laughed hesitantly. “I’ll take good care of Micah, so don’t worry about it.”

“Julie!” Micah called out, “help me get this mattress inside!”

“Coming… Dear.” She said before scampering off to help Micah.
A calm breeze passed over the newly built Tribal estate.

“Do you think he’ll be ok?” a white ghost asked her brother.

“Yeah, he’ll be fine.” The black spirit replied.

“They grow up so fast.” A striped orange and black spirit commented

“Yeah.” Said the white spirit again.

“Ready to go on now?” Vangelis asked.

The spirits looked at each other and nodded amongst themselves.

“Yeah; we’re ready to go home.” The black spirit said finally.

“Then, rest in peace, all of you.” Vangelis said as the spirits faded away.

“Don’t worry. I’ll watch him.” He whispered as he walked off into the whispering zephyrs into the gathering night.

Wooo for a happy ending Very Happy (even if I secretly wonder if there will be another installment where it all goes horribly wrong!) Yay also for sneaky cameos from past characters we know and love.

I agree with Wrince, your writing has really come on. It was always full of intrigue and great story-telling, but it just seems much more polished now. Excellent Fox.

"That's all. Class dismissed." The owl said.

Zack stood up, dumping his supplies into his bag. Another writing assignment. "Ah well" he thought "That's what I get for college level journalism."

He sighed as he walked out of the building onto the courtyard of the campus. Students were busy studying everywhere there was shade for them to lurk in. Some were writing, some were drawing, some were practicing their instruments; giving the air a very distinct chaotic sound that echoed in the courtyard. Zack walked through the campus too his dorm room. Lilly, his roommate, was drawing something on a scratch piece of paper. As he approached, she furiously crumpled up the piece of paper and threw it to the side before grabbing another sheet and starting again.

Zack greeted her and went to the refrigerator, grabbed himself a caffinated drink, then went to his room, booted up his laptop and started to write his paper. A few hours later, he left his room. Lilly had left a note on the counter:

Out with friends, Back soon.

Zack merely sighed and decided he needed a break. He left his dorm and went to the community pool which was a short 5 minute walk from the dorm. Inside, he showered up and got into the pool. Zack hated when people stared at him. He knew they always did. He was scarred across his body because of the unforgiving environment he had grown up in. As he slid into the pool, mothers hid their children from him; they feared him. Some boys who were not near their parents got an idea in their head. The approached Zack and started to pelt him with water toys. After a short while, so as to avoid doing anything he would regret later, he left the pool to change and go back to his dorm.

As he toweled off his fox fur, he heard muffled cries coming from a few lockers down. He poked his head around the row of lockers saw what it was and left as silently and as quickly as he could. As he made it outside, he sighed as he thought about it. Why couldn't they save it for when they got home?

He wandered back to his dorm and found it still as he had left it; no Lilly to be found. He sighed and got back to his work, then fell asleep shortly after.

A little thing I've been tooling up. ^^

Fortunately for you, Wrince, when I get an idea, I drive it into the ground.

Next morning came like a brick to Zack.‭ ‬The air hit him like a cold brick.‭ ‬He stretched and yawned before standing up.‭ ‬He investigated his room a little and found that his door and window had been opened slightly,‭ ‬allowing the chilly spring morning into his bedroom.‭ ‬His blanket wasn’t on his bed either.‭ ‬He shrugged off the door and window to last night‭; ‬he couldn’t remember if they were open or not when he had went to bed.‭ ‬He left his room and found Lilly on the sofa.‭ ‬She appeared tired,‭ ‬there were tear streaks on her cheeks,‭ ‬leaving lines in her grayish fur.‭ ‬Zack sat down next to her and asked her what was wrong while giving her a light hug.

She sobbed a little before collapsing on him in a fit of tears‭; ‬hanging from his neck with her arms as she leaned her head against his chest.‭ ‬She reeked strongly of booze,‭ ‬probably from the night before,‭ ‬reasoned Zack.‭

“Itsh‭… ‬so hard shometimes‭…” ‬she started in a sobbing,‭ ‬drunken slur.‭ “‬Ish just tha‭’ ‬I wan‭’ ‬someone t‭’” ‬she hiccupped‭ “‬t‭’ ‬make me feel like I’m worsh shomethin‭’” ‬she cried deeper on him.‭ ‬After the fit subsided,‭ ‬she continued‭ “‬I’m shorry Zac‭…” ‬She hiccupped again‭ “‬Zack.‭ ‬I couldn‭’… ‬couldn‭’ ‬shtop‭… ‬couldn‭’ ‬shtop mehself‭…” ‬she wailed even louder.

Zack dismissed her drunken incoherences as he carried her off to bed, tucking her in tightly and then returning to the crisp morning air. It was a good day for a morning walk; the fog was still heavy on the ground, the dawn was still breaking, casting golden rays into the mist. He took a deep breath as he walked into the mists.

About 20 minutes later, he went to the campus cafeteria. It was a saturday, so the cooks had just left some basic things out: Eggs, bacon, sausage, cereal as well as some bread and a toaster. As Zack piled up some food, he heard some protesters outside, protesting the food again. He sighed and sat down. He remembered a paper he did on the same subject.

It was about 2 years ago, and he was just starting college. His class had to write a viewpoint paper as a writing ability test. Zack had heard similar protesters that day, and he decided to take the other point. He still remembered some of the passages.

"...And what else would we do with the dead bodies of the convicts or suicides; leave them to rot when many could use the meat? Not all creatures can survive on grass... Eggs only come from those animals who choose that they are not ready for having children; and instead of nothing, they go to the good of the populace... sausage is only bad if the victim was killed against their will, not killed by natural causes or by the state..."

He shook his head as he ate some toast. Why couldn't people understand basic reasoning? About halfway though his meal, A quite hung-over Lilly walked into the still quiet cafeteria. She got a cup of coffee and a bagel, then sat down to join Zack.

"You probably hate me now..." She said wistfully before he had a chance to speak.

"Nah." he took a bite of muffin. "Why would I be?"

"Because... I... I..." she started welling up with tears again, and Zack thought it best to change the subject before she started wailing again.
"Did you hear the good news?" He asked quickly.

She sniffled "..Huh?"

He quickly cast around for any news he could think of. "Uh... Did you hear that... Erm..." he saw the protesters "That they're finally getting rid of those protesters?"

"Oh... good..." She sighed and put her head on her arms and sobbed lightly into them. He patted her on the head and offered her some of his muffin. It was her favorite kind of muffin. She hesitantly took it and ate a little bit of it.

"Relax, Lilly. Get some sleep. The booze made you funny in the head." Zack said after a moment.

"Zack... I..." Lilly slightly sobbed. A sceane was starting to form around them as students began to file in.

"Come on, Lilly." Zack said, leading her out of the cafeteria, bringing his food with him. When they got back to the house, Zack asked Lilly what was going on.

"Zack... You know I've had a crush on you for like, forever, right?" Lilly said, with what little composure she had.

"Well, yeah. You've told me many times." Zack said. "Why are you bringing it up?"

"Well... I was out with the girls last night... I didn't want to drink much... but they insisted..." Lilly said, her composure wavering.

Zack could tell what she was going to tell him. He was a writer, after all. He knew that Lilly hated to disappoint people, and that if they insisted that she drink, she wouldn't be able to deny them. Lilly really did have a fairly weak will. "It's Ok. I don't mind that you drove home drunk, Lilly, but I wish you would call me or wait there until you're ok to come home. Now get some rest."

She started to sob again. For an aggressive drunk, when she had a hangover she became overly apologetic. "Lilly, don't worry about it. I'm sure it will be alright. No one saw you, right?" He asked. She shook her head. "Alright then. Get some sleep. I'm sure you'll be fine."

She nodded her tearstreaked head as she went to her room. Zack could hear mild sobbing coming from her room as he returned to work. A while later, he could hear she had gone to bed. He sighed in relief as her fits ended.

*Ping* A new Email from Zack's professor. The deadline had been moved up and the assignment had been extended; it now needed to be 15 pages by tuesday. Zack sighed, this time more stressed. He was up to 9 and a half pages. It was doable still. He stared at his screen, willing more words to come to him as he continued to work into the afternoon.

You already knows my thoughts on this but I can't help but love the subject of the protesters and food concerning the human-like animals. Just adore it x3 So many people just skim it or don't even touch the subject ^^

And I'm loving their current situation...him being so rational to her irrationality, just adore it x3 I can't wait to see what happens with them two x3

Recently I was talking to Fox and he showed me one of his more recent stories. I really enjoyed the mood and description of it, and got the OK from him to put it up here in his writing thread. And so, here comes the first update here in quite some time. ^^

This story here was written by Wisefox, and I am merely posting it with his permission.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is the life of Nikory Vidal, whose intellectual rights are © to Meeko Pilotto/Charlene Cardona. This is a work in progress on her behalf, and her views and the views expressed in the following story may or may not be the same and do not reflect each other. That being said, the following is written by Wisefox as a request.

That is all, thank you.

Nikory stirred. She’d dreamt about Charles again. She sighed as she shook the sleep from her head. The silver sable ferret looked out the window over the gathering dawn from her friend Crown’s bar. It was a humble bar, perched at World’s end; nothing special about it to speak of. Nikory lived here, safe from the reaches of the New Order of the World, NOW, and their conflict with the Revolution. A glint of silver glinted on the mountain for a moment in the early morning, but it was gone in a flash. Just another normal morning, she thought.

She went downstairs to meet up with Crown for breakfast. They weren’t opening for another hour, so there was some time to enjoy their food. Not that there was much to enjoy; World’s End had very little to eat, being the last waypoint before the tundra set in. It was, however, oddly warm here, like it was the perpetual end of the earth. All the water was underground, there was nowhere to grow anything, and nothing would grow there. All they really had were the mines to the north, and even then it wasn’t much of a mining town.

Nikory slowly ate her meager portions while having a chat with Crown about the goings on in the world at the end of the world. Working in a bar told them everything about the world… including the unsettling news that NOW was moving up to World’s End on a hunt to find the Silver Fox.

“A lot of shit, I say.” Crown remarked as the topic arose. “He doesn’t exist. Who could really bring something back from the dead?”

“I dunno Crown.” Nikory replied. “They say he brought back Silverwing.”

“And that no-good ingrate has sent off for his murder. Shows what good he is.”

“I guess.” Nikory shrugged and returned to her bowl. The sludge inside it somehow seemed less appealing now. “I guess we should get started.”

“I suppose.” Crown said, getting up and brushing his plume. A crowned pigeon, he was always having trouble with his plume. “Well kiddo, let’s go.”

“You’re not THAT much older, you coot.”

“Old enough to still whip ya.” He laughed as he cleared the table. Nikory shrugged again and went to unlock the door. Outside, she could see a crane, a bluebird and a swan standing there, dressed in outlandish uniforms.

“Crown…” She started, “I think we have a problem.”

“What is it?” Crown said, sticking his head out into the doorway. “Brigands already?”

“Oh, they’re thieves alright…” she said, backing away from the door. Her tail quivering, her fur standing on end, her hands were shaking so much, she dropped the key. Crown came around and looked at the door, then scowled. “Dammit.” He cursed before opening the door to the NOW officers stepping in the threshold. Before they could see her, Nikory dropped behind the bar, hoping not to be seen.

“Greetin’s” Crown said, faking a cheerful accent. “Welcome t’ Crown’s…”

“Save the bit.” The one of the birds said. “They say a ferret is here.”

“Yes, and they say that she is your partner.” Said another.

“So, we’ve come to take her away, to learn her place in the world.” said the last.

“Now, I don’t know what you fellas are talking about…” Said Crown, his cheeriness starting to morph to anger. “There is nothing for your kind around here, so just get…”

There was an audible whack, and crown stopped talking. One of the birds must have hit him. “This world is ours, and we will tell you who is welcome where. Give us the slime and we’ll be on our way.”

“I can’t. She left already.”

“She couldn’t have. We’ve been there all morning.”

“Since midnight?”

“Yes.”

Nikory scrunched tighter under the bar, trying to get under the trap door there before they got past him. She heard footsteps just as she closed the door on top of herself.

“See? Nothing here.” Came Crown’s voice.

“Quite.” Came the first bird. “Well, I see there’s nothing wrong here…”

“Damn straight.”

“So, you’re coming with us for interrogation.”

There was sounds of a struggle, then the sickening crack of a skull, then the sound of a body being dragged away. Nikory sobbed quietly to herself, knowing that her old friend may not survive this; possibly his last encounter. She curled up and wept silently. The quiet above was the coldest, longest silence she’d ever felt; worse than when they’d taken Charles. She was alone, so very alone now, and there was nothing she could do.

It felt warm to her body, but cold to her soul as she opened the trap door again, only to see that the building was on fire. The birds had set it alight to flush her out, if she were in there. She grabbed the rifle from above the bar, the ammo and pistol they kept in the drawers, and jumped out the back window, dashing off into the gathering dawn.

Around midday, she found herself in the middle of a field, without a single clue where to go. She had fled south, knowing she wouldn’t survive in the unforgiving arctic terrain. She sat down in the grass and plotted her next move. Obviously she’d have to find Crown, that would naturally be the first step, but where would he be? She sighed and looked around. The day was relatively clear, and a little windy. It could have been worse, she thought.

She sketched out a small map on the ground and started thinking about where they would have taken Crown. There were so many outposts in the world, he could be anywhere. It seemed hopeless. A cloud passed over the sun, casting a shadow over her heart. She figured she may as well start at the beginning before standing up and walking off towards Aven City; the place the nightmare began.

It wasn’t a mystery to anyone. Aven City was the center of the world. It was where Silverwing overthrew the Peacekeepers, who didn’t actually keep peace as kill, separate and eradicate those who disrupted their peace. It was the capital of the world. It was where the birds ruled. It was near suicide for a landwalker like her to even attempt to get in without papers, let alone get out alive.

It beat being alone.

Several days of travel brought her to the gates of the city. The huge, imposing gates glared down at her, the emblem of the city staring straight through her chest and into her soul. There seemed to be a perpetual shroud of darkness around this place, possibly from the thousands of flying birds overhead. It was rare sunlight ever reached the ground around this horrible place. She approached the gate, exhausted.

“Sir… I need to get in…” She gasped to the robin guarding the doors. “It’s an emergency...”

“There is no emergency for your filthy kind.” The robin said.

“Really… My son is in there and he will die unless I get this to him…” She said, holding up her drinking water, trying to pass it off as medicine.

“Who in Advancia sold a landwalker medicine?”

“Sir, I made it, from herbs around the city… I need to get in.”

“Very well. Let’s see your paperwork.”

Nikory froze. She didn’t have any, and didn’t have enough time or knowledge or resources to forge one in a believable time to her lie. She worked up some tears and pleaded with the robin. “Sir… Please, I was attacked in the wilderness by some ferals… They shredded my paperwork, and I fear they come this way…”

“Fearals? Really? I thought all those tribes were destroyed with the peacekeepers.”

“Then how do you explain these?” she said, indicating parts of her body that had been injured in various ways on her trek. Some from where she’d fallen, others from where she’d been scratched. “I couldn’t have gotten them otherwise, unless I’d walked from the edge of the world, and why would anyone do that?”

“I suppose you’ve got a point. Any bird would have flown, and landwalkers would have been shipped or driven out. We’ll investigate the ferals, you stay here.” He said, pushing her to the side and walking out. As she pretended to be pushed back harder, she filched the key ring from his belt, having gotten quite good at basic sleight of hand in the bar.

As the bird gathered his comrades to head out on a wild animal chase, Nikory slipped past the gates, slipping the keys into a crude pack she’d fashioned out of natural materials, namely bark, grass and some fur. It was long enough to hold the short rifle, the small gun, the ammo, some food and water and her new key ring. She wandered around the city, listening for what she could, hoping that someone somewhere knew anything about what she wanted to know.

“I hear Ferals were spotted out to the northeast.” One fox said to a wolf.

“Damn things. Not quite on par with the rest of us. Still like them better than NOW.” Replied the wolf.

“Damn straight.”

Obviously, word traveled fast in the city of birds. Nikory listened to several conversations similar to this, passive eavesdropping was another thing she reminded herself to thank Crown for, if she ever found him again.

Nikory looked around, seeing nothing but similar houses upon themselves. The houses themselves were small and white, much smaller than her barroom, which seemed unfathomable to her. The shelters were concrete with bars on the window; they appeared more like prison cells than homes. She shuddered and wandered off to find anything less depressing. What she found, however, was a bar.

The Lonely Landwalker bar was very small. Small didn’t begin to describe it. The whole bar, including living quarters, was smaller than any of the houses she’d just passed. There were animals crammed in, shoulder to shoulder here, leaving a pocket of space around the corner seat, where five bulky animals were crowded around a figure Nikory couldn’t see. She pickpocketed her way though the crowd, getting a bit of money she thought she may need until she reached the front line. There was some kind of fight going on, but all Nikory could see of the opposition, was the small silver and black glints on a tail, before the figure vanished from sight.

Nikory went to the bar. The fight was over, the opponent had left in a blink; no one could see who they were fighting. She tried to overhear what she could, from the birds who had gotten in the fight

“I tell ya, it was the Silver Fox. We could have been rich.”

“Aw, hell. He’s just a rumor. He doesn’t really exist.”

“Whatever. Hey, you see the new guy they brought in from World’s End?”

Nikory Perked up. Could it be that it was Crown?

“Yeah, yeah. Some wreck, I don’t know if he’s even still alive. They brought him past the Gates.”

The Gates. The walls to the inner sanctum of Aven City, the gates to the fortress of NOW. Only one creature had ever been risky enough to storm the gates, and that creature was most likely a myth. If Crown was on the other side of it, however, she knew she’d have to give it a shot, one way or another. He’d do the same for her, granted he’d have a much easier time of it.

She paid for her drinks with some of the stolen money, and slipped out through a crack in the wall just out behind the bar, stepping back outside the city. It was a small crack she’d barely noticed, but she figured it must be used to smuggle things in… or out. She made a mental note of it, in case she needed to use it again.

She sighed. There was no way to get past the gates. It was hopeless, she thought as a roll of thunder brought rain. It splashed against her as she sat against the wall, thinking about her next move. Yes, she’d found what she thought was Crown, but he was somewhere impossible to get to.

“I guess that’s that…” She whispered to herself. “We’re all going to wash away like water, right down… the… drain…” she said, slowing down as an idea came to her. “The drains!” She frantically searched for the small opening to the sewer system, finally coming across it.

The drain was small and grated. It didn’t seem like there would be a way in here, and there was no way to really follow it, but she didn’t walk this far through the world to be stopped now by some little grate. She jumped on it, hit it, smashed it with a gun, picked up a rock and tried to beat it, but it was no use. The grate didn’t budge an inch. Defeated, she sat on it, trying to think of what to do next, when suddenly the grate fell out from beneath her, dropping her into the sludge of the drainage and public sewers.

She cringed initially, the water was uncomfortably warm, causing her to bolt up and hit her head on the low tunnel. She crouched again, rubbing her head, before stalking along the dark tunnel, the walls being the only source of guidance.

The walls spread out eventually until she found herself at a junction. Three tunnels passed before her, and she had to pick one fast. The water had risen to her waist as she’d progressed, and only grew more disgusting. She was obviously in the sewers now.

“Crown owes me big for this…” She said as something bumped into her and floated away. She didn’t care to find out what it was. She walked down the center path, figuring birds were too arrogant to use one of the side paths when designing the city, and walked out to where she thought the base was. The tunnel had narrowed again, but it was still too high up for her to reach the grate. She did, however, hear some voices come from the space above her.

“Alright scum. You’ve shown some adeptness at psiconics. Looks like you get to meet him personally.” said a voice.

“I’d rather die.” came a second voice, this one oddly familiar to Nikory, like something in a distant dream.

“That can be arranged.” said the first voice. “You will die; you just have to submit first.”

There was a sound like someone spitting. Then a crack, and an “Oof!”, before the familiar voice was dragged away. She just couldn’t put her finger on the voice. It was so familiar… She sighed quietly and continued. This section of the sewers was much more roundabout. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, she found a narrow tunnel, and a bunch of feathers floating in the water. Bird prison. She realized she must have just left normal animal prison, and was relieved she wasn’t caught.

She looked up through the lower grates and saw the prisoners. They looked normal, and she could only wonder what their crimes were. She found Crown’s cell and nearly cried on the spot.

To say Crown looked bad would be an understatement. He had dried blood mottling his usually clean feathers. It also looked like one of his wings was broken. His plume had been cut some, not a lot, but noticeably shorter. He had a black eye, and some dried blood on his beak too. Nikory didn’t waste any time wrenching his grate from the floor. She beckoned his stunned form down to her, ushering him down as quickly as quickly as he could go.

She replaced the grate and they hugged.

“Thanks kiddo.” He said, smiling at her. “I thought I was done for.”

“You almost were, you coot.” She said, holding him close.

“Let’s get back to the bar.”

“They burned it down.”

“We’ll make a new one.”

It clicked then. “Charles!”

“No, I’m Crown.” Said Crown.

“No, Charles is in there! I need to save him! They’re going to kill him!”

“They’ll kill you too, but I know I can’t stop you if Charles is there. You never used to shut up about him.” Crown sighed.

“Just head straight, and you’ll find the Exit. I’ll meet you back in World’s End when I save him.”

“Good luck...” he said, limping off to the exit she’d mentioned, as she took his place in the cell.
