It was about 4 years ago (exactly on Dec. 19) when I was first inspired to draw. Soon after, I stumbled across the topic of webcomics, and yet again, not long after, it became one of my goals in life to eventually get a webcomic of my own up and running. Early on this year, I tried the hosting site DrunkDuck.com, but lost interest after 6 pages because I was writing (well, not even writing, really) on a vague premise, and just didn't see where I could have taken it, even that early in the story.
Now, I'm definitely not a story writer, but I'm starting to come up with another, more specific basis to write about. I'm going to try again to get up a comic of my own when I can write out a full plot and developed characters. I don't want to say too much about it yet, seeing as it's still in development, but I just wanted to let you all know that I'm working on something and if there were any tips or tricks you could give me, they would be very much appreciated. If things go well, by next year I may be drawing up pages, but I am in university and am known to procrastinate, so we'll see. _________________ "Procrastinate now, don't put it off."

A few tips,
A) Define your comic - is it a full page story, is it a story by four panels, is it a gag a week etc etc etc
B) Preproduction - not enough comics think before they leap and they end up leaping into a brick wall. Pre production allows you to see your characters, story and your own ablility to produce said things. It also allows you to see the time its going to take to produce a page/strip
C) Time - Make sure you have a bit of time to set aside to write/draw your comic
D) Story - I prefer a story completed beginning to end before I start. But thats just me, some people work well with writing it as they write their comics.
E) Another person - If you choose to have one or more people involved with the creation of your comic, ie writers, artists etc, make damned sure they are not going to flake out on you. I dont care if youve been best friends since 2nd grade, make sure of their and YOUR dedication. Ive seen many comics fall apart because one piece left.
F) Dont dress your main character in black, shades of black, or black. Its far far far to cliche.

Not sure I can really come up with pointers since I only have experience of reading rather than drawing, but I guess most of what I'd suggest would be common sense.
1)I'd try to set aside a set time each week or so to do nothing but the comic without interruptions. Make it part of your routine rather than trying to cram in a few minutes here and there and do little bits at a time.
2) Better to update less frequently (say one a fortnight) and make sure you can make every schdeuled update, than to be over-ambitious and try for 3 times a week only to rapidly find you never have time to make that many comics.
3) Maybe you don't need to have a fully written story, but try to write yourself a little summary of the main plot points you want each story arc to have before you start drawing it. Quite often you see comics where the writer doesn't really know where they're going any more and the storyline wanders all over the place.
4) Keep a very detailed list of what colours or colour combinations you use for each character, particularly if you might not get all the colouring done in one go. It sounds odd, but it looks weird if the main character is a slightly different shade of blue (or whatever) in every comic or panel.
Again, these are just my opinions as a reader. There are bound to be lots of things that don't occur to people until they actually start trying to make a webcomic themselves!
5) I'd love to see a comic by you! You're a really good artist and I think it would be very well drawn. Lots and lots of luck with the project! _________________ "Fairytales do not teach children that dragons exist; they already know that. Fairytales teach children that dragons can be killed."

... What if they're not wearing anything at all?
At any rate, I applaud you for taking up this task, Quiv. I hope you do well, but if you decide against it, that'd be fine too. _________________

Hmm, while I can't give proper suggestions seeing as to how Cat well, pretty much has soemthing and Angi has summed up the rest, I can only say that yeah, you have to do things with time, like weeks ahead and such just in order to have failsafes and such, more so when you REALLY get busy with life and it just doesn't permit you so. Other than that, they've pretty much said everythign XD I can only hope that if you make the venture of making a webcomic that it comes out awesome, I mean you ish and excellent artist so anything done, I'm sure it shall be divine ^^ _________________ Critters corner of awesomesauce webcomicking

Thanks everyone! I really want to get something going... now to get a few more specifics.
It's going to be a full-page story based moreso on personal dilemmas than societal ones like P&B seems to be. Reading comics, I came across the notion that some focus solely on character development with little to no story while others are the other way around. I want to get somewhat of a balance, but moreso the character development area is what I want to delve into. If you take a look at my avatar, she (yes, she) was originally going to be the main character, and likely still is. I hope that's not too much near-black to be clichè ^^.
As for pre-production, that's what I'm working on and that's what definitely seems like it will take the longest, 'specially in my case. I'm trying to implement a lot of symbolism as well as very innovative settings while keeping the story moving. It may sound a tad complicated for someone with my writing ability, but once that's finished, the rest should go smoothly. Actually setting aside time to work on it seems like a really good technique too. It's good to hear support ^^.
If anyone's interested in more detail, ask me in chat one day or send a PM... or maybe I'll post more here when I develop it a bit more. No spoilers though, I want it to be fresh for anyone reading it for the first time ^^. _________________ "Procrastinate now, don't put it off."

You know, I'd alwasy thought your avi looked female but I never wanted to comment in case I offended you!
Seems like you're going about it in the sensible way. Lots and lots of luck, and if you ever need support, you know we're all here as a big family and we don't tend to be nasty about WIPs! _________________ "Fairytales do not teach children that dragons exist; they already know that. Well, courtesy of a group meeting going horribly wrong at school, I had a lot of time to work on a basic plot (beginning to end), and so now I'm going to be starting the scripting pretty soon. I'm wondering what the best way to host would be though. I tried using DrunkDuck.com before, and that went pretty smoothly for a free hosting site, but what are the other options? I'm just curious, as I'm looking to have this up by the end of this year at the current rate I'm going. _________________ "Procrastinate now, don't put it off."

Well, there's that one and I think comicgenesis.com, but I'm not sure just how good they are or how they deal when it comes to webcomics, just know that you have to show them part of the comic to make sure that it isn't copyrighted material and they work with you from there. _________________ Critters corner of awesomesauce webcomicking

Free hosting, but I think if you ask TOC really nicely, he might host you on his server... _________________ If you heal something that's dead and you unkill them which is the same thing as dying but backwards.

Yup heres the deal, I know a few of you want to start webcomics, I have a few free servers lying around. What I was thinking about doing was creating a sort of Plush and Blood Presents : Webcomics. It would be a site that you guys to could stick your comics and not have to worry about all the red tape and such. All rights are yours and such everything you create belongs to you etc etc etc. And I could probably be convinced to do a little web maintence for you all as well. Up to you guys though.

hmm... *ponders*
That sounds like a good idea! I'm for it, if you're willing to offer it up ^^. I'd be somewhat new to that sort of thing (administration), but it definitely sounds like a good starting block. It'll still be a little bit before my comic will be starting... who else is planning on a comic of their own? _________________ "Procrastinate now, don't put it off."

I wouldn't call it a "comic", as such, but I'm working on a, uh... serialized succession of stick figure drawings with a story. Well, I would be, if certain things had happened and certain other things weren't currently happening. _________________
