Here's a little thing I wanted to try out for a while. But first, what is Mafia? Well, to be completely frank, it's a card game. However, anyone who's ever played the game would know that it's actually a role playing game in itself, and can easily be played without cards.

The game of mafia is actually a murder mystery. You need a mildly large pool of characters to play, with 10 being an ideal number.

To start, there are 4 important characters within the game:

-The Narrator
-The Mafia Leader
-The Detective
-The Doctor

The narrator is the story teller of the game. He's the one who assigns the players certain roles within the game secretly, and progresses the story line so things run smoothly and without confusion.

The Mafia Leader is the murderer. Every turn he or she picks a person they want to kill off by messaging the narrator. Then his turn is over.

The Detective's job is to find out who the murderer is. Every turn he gets the chance to tell the narrator who he thinks the murder is, and the narrator must tell him if he is wrong or not. The detective's job is to convince the rest of the players to get rid of the murderer. (I'll explain how that works later.) Be wary though. You won't know who the real detective is, so it could easily be the murderer trying to convince you to get rid of somebody else.

The Doctor has the chance to save a character every turn by choosing who he or she thinks the murderer is going to target. If that character was meant to die, than the doctor can save the character and then have a better knowledge of who the killer is. (Even though the doctor usually always saves himself or herself btw. Razz)

So that's basically the gist of it. The narrator will tell the "town" to go to sleep, and turns happen as such:

Narrator: Awaken mafia. Who do you want to get rid of?
Mafia Leader: (messages who they want to kill)
Narrator: Mafia go to sleep. Awaken Detective. Who do you want to investigate?
Detective: (chooses and gets if it's the right answer or not)
Narrator: Detective go to sleep. Awaken Doctor. Who do you want to save?
Doctor: (Chooses who they want to save.)
Narrator: Go to sleep doctor. Awaken little town.

Then the narrator fills in what happened. Then the town has a meeting and votes for who they want to put in jail. If they choose the mafia leader, then everybody wins the game. Hooray.

If not, then the cycle continues until the mafia leader is caught or until everybody else dies.

So if any body's interested in playing, I'd be glad to host. Chat games go quick and can be exiting and nerve racking. Forum games go slow but can be more intricate and elaborate. I'd want to test out a chat game first (which would be held on the role playing board) though to see how smoothly things turn out.

Hehe, that sounds like quite good fun, and has the added bonuses that we can all gang up on each other (rather than uniting against a common foe), and in theory it needn't take ages. I think it sounds ideal for chat really. [do we get to give ourselves names and backstories too each new game, or does the narrator do that?]

Yup! You can create clue-esque personalities with strange clothing from the 1920's and have strange silly names and back stories to boot. The fun of it all lies in your ability to survive mob psychology. Very Happy

Hey, that sounds quite interesting :3
I played it a few times IRL, but a forum or chat version could be pretty fun too! Count me in ^-^

Awesome! The games would go fairly quick even with 10 people, so I hope a lot of people at least try the game once.

As Myu should know, since the idea of this game was, so far as I know, originally brought up in an MSN conversation between him and I, I plan on playing at any time a Mafia is hosted on forums.
Not so interested in the chat variety, though. I like my slow methodicity. =P

Everyone may participate, lawl.

Just note that if you play, a lot of you will very likely die repeatedly as well as comically.
