Rating
Genre - Sci-Fi
Secondary Genre - Comedy
Reading Level Any age really...
Synopsis -
After the earth is destroyed, aurthur dent and his best friend Ford Prefect, hitchhike across the galaxy in the craziest ways possible
Reviewers Opinion -
I love this book, I have the complete unabridged version (one collector series). The words aren't tough, making it appealing to younger people while the other zany stuff keeps it appealing for others.
Pros - Well devloped characters, plot, keeps the reader interested.
Cons - Can't really think of any
Other Books by Author - The restraunt at the end of the universe, so long and thanks for all the fish, etc.

I;d just like to add that the last book, mostly harmless, is really messed up. It involves a lot of hopping through parallel dimensions, and just feels like it was written to resolve the storyline. the rest of the series is awesome though. If you have not read it, you should. it will help you understand what goes on here a lot better. Well, Maybe not. _________________

So glad you added this to the new classics list! I bought the original quadrilogy all in one book when I was about 11 and have read it every couple of years since. It has been so well thumbed that I recently had to buy another copy as my first fell apart at the spine (and I'm not a book abuser at all!). I think it was truly one of the most un-put-downable books ever, and the fact that it still appeals to me just as much 14 years later shows just how universal the appeal is.
Did anyone see the film of it last year? It wasn't a patch on the book I thought but some scenes were delightfully realised (Arthur vomiting wool when the Heart of Gold's improbability drive kicks in, teehee). Still well worth a watch unless you're a complete HHGTG fanatic, in which case your enjoyment may be marred by constantly saying "that didn't happen until So Long..." etc.
NB There is one more Adams book: The Salmon of Doubt. This contains a collection of Adams' previously unpublished essays, many of which are technological and quite interesting. It also contains an incomplete novel on which he was working when he died. I have never had the heart to read this part as I worry it would be deeply unsatisfying to read only half a novel by such a great author. If anyone has read the part-novel bit, please tell me what you think so I can decide whether my high opinion of the great man will be spoiled if I read it! |

I will. Eventually. I'm just a wuss about it because I don't want it to fall short of my expectations. Which is lame... life hardly ever meets your expectations. _________________ "Fairytales do not teach children that dragons exist; they already know that. Thanks for the advice. I'll grab it when I next go back to my dad's (just moved flats, not much space here for all my books)

Can't really remember. Going to dad's tomorrow so will grab it then and post a more coherent discussion when I've re-read it. _________________ "Fairytales do not teach children that dragons exist; they already know that. Fairytales teach children that dragons can be killed."

Truly one of the greatest stories ever. I read the whole first three books when I was 12 in less than four hours at the public library (where my mom works.) I checked it out at about 4:30, and went up to return it at around 8:00 and my mom asked, "what you're not interested?"
and i said, "no, I'm done."
she didn't believe me.
it was the third time of reading them, so I wasn't unfamiliar with the story.
Douglas Adams co-authored a book called "Last Chance To See" which was a true story about him and at least one other author going to see the South American rain forests, I haven't read it, but my mom liked it a lot. _________________ I walk that fine line between genius and insanity like a drunk taking a sobriety test

Hi there Muse. Hope you've stopped by the intro thread - pleased to have you here.
Same for me too. I think I read the first four in an afternoon on a long car journey in my early teens, then had nothing to read when we got to where we were staying for a few days and I had to beg my parents to take me out to buy more books! _________________ "Fairytales do not teach children that dragons exist; they already know that.
